She was special. [She grunted.] She used her connections to help her buddies through the media and tried to knock other folks down a peg. The rest of the paparazzi were normal.
I could count the number of witches, warlocks, wizards, mages, sorcerers, hekai or whatever name you want to give them on two hands. But, after a while, you get on a first-name basis with most of them just because of how rare it was.
In my life? It was everywhere, but my mother and grandmother were both witches... or druids really, and mom taught me everything she knew. Most people, though, thought magic was sleight of hand. David Copperfield making a building disappear with an optical illusion, that sort of thing.
Yeah, that's kind of how it works... a little. Peoples' minds trick them because they make assumptions. Potions, though, alchemy was something I studied with my mother while she taught me magic. So, I just had to study how the different plants and parts here worked to figure out how to combine them right. The rules aren't that different.
Nice to know there's still some kinda logic to it.
[Magic is weird, but slightly easier to deal with when there's rules, at the very least. Hmm... He's pretty sure he's gotten all the spores by now, so he'll turn it over for her to check.]
That should do. Add those to the clear solution right there and don't breathe in the fumes. Need to clear off the resin in them or the person that drinks this will be sick to their stomach as soon as it touches their tongue.
[She nodded.]
Really, it's like chemistry, or cooking. The whole idea doesn't change, I guess, no matter what world you're in.
I only did a little chemistry in my classes, but it was pretty interestin' when we covered it. [Honestly, that might have been a better major to go into than the one he ultimately chose...]
You'll have to teach me the science behind it sometime!
I was home schooled, so the topics we covered were a lot more focused on what she wanted to make sure I knew. Alchemy and Chemistry came up a lot. But I can give you a lesson sometime, if you want, yeah. It's not nearly as tricky as you'd think.
Alchemy? I love it almost as much as magic on its own. It's... I can sit down and think while I'm doing it, focus and use my mind for something. I feel a little like every once in a while that's the least used part of me.
[She looked at everything and shook her head.]
This is the part that gets annoying. You end up waiting for almost a half hour. Sometimes, I'd have two brews going at a time just to make up for it.
Yeah, go for it. We can sit and talk for a bit if you'd like. You don't have to stick around for the next part unless you want to. [She smirked and shrugged, leaning against the wall.] I suppose it is good to have something to do with your hands. Idle hands are the devil's playthings, they say.
Well, when I get bored, I do stupid things that can get me in trouble, so I keep myself from getting bored much. [There was a snort.] So, in a way it kind of is true around me, even if I'm not really the devil.
About half the time it involves poking my nose into things people don't want found out. The other half, well... I kind of need variety in feeding partners. [cough] I'm probably only getting away with just Asuka here because it's not all working properly.
...
[Nope, totally not buying it.] And you're full of shit, but I'll let that slide. Long as you're not in my hair, pranks are fun to watch.
You, my dear, have the innocent looking face of someone who's about to put a bucket on top of someone's door. It's one of your more attractive qualities.
Hehe, yeah yea, so you say. I still think you'd pull a prank or something like it if you could pull it off. Maybe not something quite that stupid, but still.

...annoying too. Invisibility spells are helpful.

[Interesting...]
So that's where you learned it all, huh? How well did it transfer to potion makin' here?

[His studies sure didn't.]
Is there anythin' we need to do next?

As for me, I'd never cause a ruckus just because I'm bored.
[Just sit and appreciate these innocently uttered, if otherwise blatant lies for a moment, Sam.]

[Not that he would, but in the hypothetical situation that he did, it would be better than that.]
